Dog Socialization Important for Service Dogs

Chase Meets New Friends

An opportunity recently arose to see a need for Chase in the arena of dog socialization. Since Chase’s graduation from Helping Paws, Inc, he has had limited opportunities to socialize with other dogs his size. We have other animals in our home but they are smaller and don’t have a huge interest in playing. Chase has a tendency to get very excited when they do express an interest in playing. In his excitement, he lets out a big boy bark. These smaller dogs interpret this to mean, “I’m done…you’re being a loudmouth”, and walk away.  I realize now how important it is to give Service Dogs the opportunity for dog socialization. Chase especially needs interaction with dogs similar in size and energy levels.

Recently, we attended a birthday event for one of our grandchildren.  Chase received the opportunity for a bit of doggy socialization with the five dogs present at the celebration.  The phrase, “Dog Heaven” (pun intended) understates his excitement! He really enjoyed the interaction. Since the dogs were unleashed, and I never unleash Chase in an uncontained area (like our fenced yard), he was somewhat restricted in his ability to play. I saw the longing in his eyes. 😢

He was so excited to be around other dogs his size. After a short meet and greet accompanied by the typical “butt sniffing,” he willingly came back into Service Dog mode and stayed by my side the whole time. Chase behaved so very well and I beamed with pride!

A New Perspective on Dog Socialization

This event made me realize that even though Chase is happy and content, he still craves that interaction with dogs his own size so he can play.  Even service dogs need many of the same things that other dogs need.  For instance, socialization, doggy playtime, free time to sniff the environment, and the ability to do what dogs do naturally contribute to their well-being.  I will certainly be pursuing some “doggie daycare” at a very reputable center, right here in our town to provide him with that needed dog socialization time.  I’d like to see him go several times a month for a few hours to be able to enjoy “just being a dog” with other dogs!
